From April, Imperial Tobacco is launching JPS Tobacco which has been specially developed for adult smokers to create their own cigarettes using a ‘cigarette making’ kit.
Sue Tranter, Consumer Marketing Manager at Imperial Tobacco comments; “We are continually researching the preferences of adult smokers in the UK, and other similar markets, to ensure our category-leading portfolio accurately reflects the category dynamics.
“In the current economic climate, the prevalent down-trading trend has accelerated as more adult smokers are moving down through the cigarette price sectors and a significant number now prefer cheaper alternative tobacco options.
“Insights gained from this process have told us that the UK is ready for JPS Tobacco which, after purchasing the cigarette maker, allows smokers to create 20 quality King Size cigarettes for £3.87*. 12 million UK adults currently choose to smoke tobacco and the current economic conditions have forced many to look at illegal sources.
“This brand launch will ensure that cost-conscious smokers, who purchase tobacco from illicit tobacco traders, will consider buying from legitimate retailers again as the JPS brand gives them a quality reassurance backed up by the heritage and value for which JPS is renowned.”
The JPS cigarette making kit is available at a recommended retail price of £6.99 and consists of a 14g pack of JPS Tobacco, 100 King Size cigarette filter tubes and a cigarette maker. Each element of the kit is also available individually. If sold individually, the RRPs are: JPS Tobacco £3.67; Make Your Own Tubes 99p for 100 and Make Your Own cigarette maker £3.09.
Sue concludes; “Imperial Tobacco has gained valuable insights both domestically and internationally from markets with trends similar to the UK such as the Netherlands, Germany, France and the USA. Our new JPS Tobacco provides consumers with the quality and heritage of JPS at a fantastic price proposition. This launch will also support retailers by encouraging smokers to turn their backs on illegal traders and buy tobacco in legitimate outlets.”

Oh crap, I just got ripped off, they charged me 6.99 for the maker + 99p for the 100 tubes and then 3.67 for the tobacco, total £11.65..Ouch
Just purchased the kit.£6.99.Great value.Easy to use.Do they do menthol tubes.?
Could anybody please give me a step by step guide on how to use my jps cig making machine … Thanks x
why does my tobacco not fill up to the filter?
JUST BOUGHT ONE TODAY ,I THINK ITS BRILLIANT FOR ROLLING YOUR OWN ,.PROPER SIZE CIGARETTES , GOOD IDEAR
just on my 3rd machine first 2 broke, tubes are too thin had to throw 2 boxes away. have to use concept machine and concept tubes, but tobacco’s nice.
your kit should have come with a little booklet and a tiny disc that will show you exactly how you make them but it is super easy put filter tube on the little white tuby bit that sticks off the end fill the compartment with tobacco use the little flat edged thingy to squish it down then close the lid and while holding fimly slide it along ONCE then when you move it back open up take cigarette off and your done but dont slide it across more than once as you will probably split the cigarette tube.
I dry mine for an hour on a piece of kitchen roll. I make about 15 cigs and 10 roll ups out of one pack, nice tobacco.
where can i buy the tobacco from ?
This product is rubbish. It does not work. I am a hand-roller over many years, but thought I might try something different. It fails to fill the tubes properly, wastes a lot of tobacco, and takes a lot more time.
Also you are tied to the JPS tobacco for this machine, which very few retailers seem to have. Even when I found it, it still did not work.
Yes, I did follow the instructions, very carefully.
My local retailer has offered me a full refund on the kit, and it appears he has had similar complaints. So I am handing it back.
A very stupid design and marketing concept.
I will stay with hand-rolling.
Once again, rubbish. Do not waste your time or money.
i totaly agree with Mr Raedmans, comments i have just bought one and it is usless i most certanly won`t buy any more of ypur products
Then your not doing it right, and you don’t have to use jps tobacco I’m using tobacco that I got from Spain called Domingo and have used other works perfect every time, try giving it another go.
Product is great
Although more shops should have the tobacco as most shops dont have it..saves a fortune and just like smoking out of a packet of jps
great idea..
wot a load oh rubbish, dont waste ur money, machine very clumsy leaves the tabbaco in the tube where do i get a refund that will buy me another pouch o bacy, filters, papers, does not save u money.the website is an advertising site for everything but this product.
The tubes split if you have a hard lump in the tray. If you don’t try to put too much tobacco in and make sure there are no lumps it works perfectly well.
great best thing since sliced bread lol, was abit discouraging at 1st nothing thought it woould be like roll ups saving myself a fortune now just wish my own brand did it now
oh well c`mon mayfair get a grip get this on the market lol
I totally disagree with all the negative comments above sure it takes a little time to get used to product if tobacco doesn’t get to filter end just tap filter a few times on hard surface I have been using since Christmas and would not go back to buying ready made we save £60 per week smoking these all I can say to people that don’t give it a good go they have more money than sense you have been able to get this method for several years abroad
I think it’s brilliant!! I have used Golden Virginia and Cutters Choice – to get to end near filter put a little bit in the chamber near the filter – tamp down with tool – put the tube on and run it through – reopen – fill chamber as normal – tamping down again – run it through again – perfect! Had some B&h in a packet added the roll ups and couldn’t tell which was which – must have smoked the B&H but never noticed!! Best to dry tobacco out a bit tho. L
Bought the kit and used other rolling tobacco (Drum). Works perfectly well, although here is a little tip: Put some baccy in the end nearest where the cig goes (about half an inch). Then tamp it down with the tool. The push the baccy towards the filler mouth with something ( i use an end of a bic pen). The fill the gap again with more baccy, tamp down and insert the paper. This way, you will get a fully filled paper with no gap near the filter. NO NEED to use their tobacco. Use what you like.
Where can I buy the kit from?
I have had amber leaf was ok had serling that was very good now trying jps not working dosent fill leaves a gap not inpressed my partner fills with tobaco then pushes with a straw 2nd cig maker i bought now.
Not very happy. Ive always bought the JPS box as its cheaper for myself and husband. Last week I bought I box and when I opened it there was enough tobacco to roll 20 filters instead of 100 as it states. Will be making a complaint to see what reply I get to this.
Just discovered the ‘make your own’ What a good idea. Find the tobacco a bit strong for my taste, will they be doing a milder version?
I have never been able to roll my own – wrong sort of spit or something, they always unravel before I’ve even got them lit. ! Anyway – I think these are great, but was advised to use pipe tobacco which I find a bit strong. I’ll see if I can find the JPS version – sounds a winner to me. Failing that I hope to find the pipe tobacco that smells of vanilla. Grateful if anyone knows what its called. I find it difficult to shop for cigarette products now that they can’t be displayed. I don’t suppose it is cheaper than rolling, but its a lot cheaper than tailor-mades.
Why have the shops stoped selling the 50g tubs
Great product only discovered 1 month ago but now can`t get 50g tubs tobacco anywhere. Maybe stopped selling cos was cheap. 100 cigs for £12.99 compared to 5 x £6.15 so disappointed.
we have been using make your own since it came out. however we have been really disappointed to find we can no longer puchase the large tubs at our local morrisons. is there any other store in the stranraer or newton stewart area where we can buy the large tubs, or can we buy them on line?
Great stuff. With little practice you can use any kind of tobbaco. I use Fosters menthol + menthol Gizeh tubes. Great ciggies. Machine seems a bit cheap, though…
this system works perfectly if you take your time and follow all the instructions properly
Just started using the product, think its good, few hiccups initially, but got it sus. now. Please tell me where to get JPS baccy.
