Battery buyers to trade down as credit crunch bites

Thursday, 12 March 2009
As the credit crunch bites, competition for sales of batteries will continue to intensify.

Recent research by Panasonic Batteries clearly demonstrated that, during the current economic downturn, consumers are actively choosing lower cost items and looking for better value - and this extends to their battery choices.

Nearly three quarters of shoppers surveyed would consider buying a cheaper battery if offered the same level of performance as their current brand. As our lives become more and more hi-tech, our battery consumption is on the rise.

Television remote controls, games consoles, digital cameras, music players or even fire alarms are just a few of the everyday items which require battery power, and when these run out shoppers are looking to replace them quickly.

With nearly 45% buying their batteries in their local convenience store, it makes sense to stock up with the batteries they require, and this means better value batteries from a brand they can trust.

Tim Clark, Marketing Manager for Panasonic Batteries, explains: "We recently conducted a survey to find out how our batteries meet consumer expectations. The result was conclusive; Panasonic was acknowledged as one of the three leading brands of battery and known for offering consumers a reliable and good value battery from a brand name they can trust. The key criteria for battery selection is longevity and this is particularly important for high usage items like remote controls, cameras and torches".

Panasonic - one of the three most trusted battery brands - provides exceptional value and longevity at a competitive price; from their entry level alkaline ranges to their latest innovation‘EVOIA' named by Guinness World Records as the World's No 1 long lasting AA battery, and also recently named by Which? As the longest lasting AA battery.

A well-laid out battery display is crucial - 40% of all sales are lost as a result of poor displays ! AA batteries account for nearly three-quarters of sales and should be reflected in the proportion of display.

Retailers should also note the popularity of alkaline batteries and capitalize on this trend by moving from a zinc range to an entry-level alkaline range available from a trusted brand like Panasonic.
