| Tuesday, 25 November 2008 | |
Harry's Nuts!, the Fairtrade nuts from Harry Hill and Fairtrade nut company Liberation, will be available at Sainsbury's and Waitrose from early next year. The nuts will be available in two varieties - salted peanuts and salted cashews. Both are extra roasted for added taste and crunchiness. The peanuts will be in 150g bags and the cashews 100g. Sainsbury's will stock the product from January 19th and Waitrose from the first week of February, in time for Fairtrade Fortnight 2009, February 23rd - March 8th. The peanuts are also available in smaller stores and other outlets in 50g bags with a suggested retail price of 59p. Negotiations are underway with pub chains and convenience stores. They can already be bought from vending machines including sites at CNN and MTV in Central London via www.cafejoe.co.uk and in university cafes across the country from Newcastle to Oxford , Bath to Sussex via www.peros.co.uk. They are also available via www.ethicalsuperstore.com. Harry is not making any money from the products which are being sold to benefit Fairtrade nut farmers in Malawi, Mozambique , Nicaragua and India . Liberation is a 100% Fairtrade nut company, co-owned by the farmers and supported by Comic Relief. Celebrity food writer Sophie Grigson has tasted the peanuts and said: ""These nuts have a very appealing creamy texture and a delicious sweet, rounded flavour enhanced by just the right degree of salt. "Perfect with a pint, but also ideal for using to garnish a Thai salad or stir-fried noodles." Harry Hill visited Fairtrade peanut farmers in Malawi this summer to meet some of the people who will benefit from his products. He came up with the idea of Harry's Nuts! because he is a big supporter of Fairtrade and eats a lot of peanuts. He says: "I've been heavily involved in getting the taste right for Harry's Nuts! and with the pack design. I'm working with Liberation, the Fairtrade nut company, and it's great that the company is run to benefit the farmers and their families." Ceri Willmott, Managing Director of Liberation, which supplies most of the own label Fairtrade peanuts to UK supermarkets, adds: "We are delighted to add Harry's Nuts! to our range of products and hope the lively packaging and the delicious taste will bring many a smile in these crunchy economic times."
