Work Rest and Play boosts sales for Mars

Friday, 17 October 2008

Mars - the UK's number one selling chocolate bar - is bringing back its popular Bell Ringers TV advert that features the contemporary take on the iconic ‘Work Rest and Play' strapline. Immediately following the advert, which first aired in March this year, total Mars bars value sales were up by 5.7.

Created by AMV BBDO, the Bell Ringers ad, a 30" spot, will be back on TV from w/c 5th October 2008. Featuring a group of monks conducting their bell-ringing duties, the ad shows how the treat of an occasional Mars bar can give you just the boost you need to get everything done with a smile.

This week Mars also revealed new Revels with a mystery flavour in a bid to boost retailers' sales.

The initial bell tones rise in rhythm and tempo as the monks carry out their duties in a lively, positive and optimistic fashion. The subsequent up-tempo bell ringing is accompanied by uplifting, feel-good music (Jump Around by House of Pain) and the ad ends with a modern twist on the classic strapline, "Work - Rest - Play".

With a £6m marketing spend The "Work - Rest - Play" campaign will build on the success of the Mars bar brand - worth a huge £137m CSV. Consumer excitement and awareness will be built further with the return of the Bell Ringers TV Advertising, a new press campaign, new in-store POS and PR activity.

"The re-introduction of the "Work - Rest - Play" creative will coincide with in-store special offers including three Single bars for 99p and two Duo bars for 80p, further supported with impactful retail displays.

Bep Sandhu, MarsTrade Relations Manager commented: "We have decided to bring back the Bell Ringers TV ad and "Work - Rest - Play" strapline because it received such a positive consumer and retailer reaction in terms of sales and awareness when it aired in March.

"Stocking up on Mars bars and placing the new Mars POS displays in prime in-store positions will communicate the "Work - Rest - Play" message to consumers and help retailers to maximize their sales during the activity. As the Number 1 Chocolate bar we know Mars will perform well for retailers. "

The original "A Mars a day helps you work rest and play" strapline was first used in TV and print commercials for the brand in 1959.

Retailers should call 0800 085 5387 to order the free POS support.
