Imperial Tobacco to launch economy JPS cigarettes as credit crunch hits smokers |
| Tuesday, 07 October 2008 | |||||||||
Imperial Tobacco is to launch a new economy brand, JPS Silver, on 3 November 2008. Iain Watkins, trade communications manager at Imperial Tobacco, said: “Increasing numbers of adult smokers are moving down through the cigarette price sectors into the economy sector. “Imperial Tobacco constantly monitors the market and a lengthy research process has told us the market is now ready for the new JPS Silver range.” All packs in the range bear the JPS insignia in a silver colour. It includes JPS King Size Blue, JPS King Size Silver, JPS King Size Menthol, JPS Superkings Blue and JPS Superkings Menthol. Recommended retail prices: King size: £4.21 for 20, £2.12 for 10 Superkings: £4.25 for 20 All variants will be available in both standard and price-marked packs. Rachel Smith, UK brand manager for Imperial Tobacco, said the economy price cigarette sector (those priced at £4.60 and below for packs of 20) had been in growth since 2006. She added: “Since January 2008, growth in the economy sector has doubled and it should have a 12.5% share of the market by the end of the year. “This accelerated growth is a result of the recent economic downturn. Rises in fuel and food costs have encouraged adult smokers to down trade whilst continuing to prefer quality and value. “This is evident across the majority of trade channels from multiples to independent convenience stores.” In 2006, the economy sector had captured more than 10% market share in just 21% of UK postcodes. By 2009 Imperial forecasts this sector will have a 10% market share in more than three-quarters of postcodes. The company expects the JPS Silver range to capture 2.5% of the UK cigarette market within three months of launch, or 15-20% of the economy sector. But the UK cigarette market as a whole continues to be hit by factors such as the bans on smoking in public places. Amal Pramanik, recently appointed UK general manager for Imperial Tobacco, said the rate of decline had increased to 5-6% last year, up from 2-3% in previous years. The range: JPS King Size Blue: 10s, 20s and 100 multipack JPS King Size Silver: 20s JPS King Size Menthol: 20s JPS Superkings Blue: 20s JPS Superkings Menthol: 20s Gallaher V Imperial?
