Sudafed extends range of decongestants this winter

Monday, 01 September 2008
Sudafed, the UK’s number one selling decongestant brand with value sales of £22 million, will be driving further category growth this winter with the launch of two new products worth an estimated £5 million.

New Non-Drowsy Sudafed Congestion & Headache Capsules (Paracetamol, Caffeine & Phenylephrine) has a new positioning in the decongestant category and for the first time champions clarity, providing targeted relief from not just a blocked nose, but also the persistent headache that can develop when a person is suffering from a cold.

New Sudafed Day & Night Capsules (Paracetamol, Caffeine & Phenylephrine) is a new product within the decongestant category that provides 24-hour relief from congestion.

The product contains two types of capsules: one to help to ease congestion during the day together with another which is specifically formulated to help relieve symptoms at night time, so people can get a good night’s rest.

Stewart Lees, Brand Manager for Sudafed, says: “Both this season’s launches are refreshing for the Decongestant Category. We know that shoppers find the category tremendously confusing. People suffer from congestion in a variety of ways and often struggle to understand which product is right for them based on their individual symptoms. Sudafed provides a comprehensive range of decongestant products, tailored to individual symptoms, which are clear and easy to understand.”

New Non-Drowsy Sudafed Congestion & Headache Capsules contain paracetamol, caffeine and phenylephrine, to effectively relieve a headache and expand the nasal passages to help ease congestion (RRP £3.99).

A pack of new Sudafed Day & Night Capsules contains day time capsules with paracetamol, phenylephrine and caffeine to help relieve congestion, and another night time capsule which contains paracetamol and phenylephrine to help relieve symptoms during the night (RRP £3.99).

This winter, the Sudafed brand will also be supported by a new £4 million advertising campaign.

The new campaign adds a touch of humour to the brand while clearly positioning Sudafed as experts for all types of congestion-related symptoms.

Lees comments: “Sudafed continues to be the number one selling brand within the decongestant category and has a strong base of loyal users. This new advertising campaign has been developed to drive further growth by broadening relevance of the brand to all types of congestion sufferers. We are excited to see the results from the new ad which has performed extremely well in testing and is set to further increase our share of the market this winter.”
