Mr Kipling introduces Big French Fancy

Tuesday, 19 August 2008
Premier Foods’ leading cake brand Mr Kipling is entering the rapidly growing celebration cake market this September with the launch of ‘The Big French Fancy’, a giant version of its iconic and popular French Fancy.

Available in pink or yellow, the cakes are the perfect addition to any family birthday party or girls’ night in.

The celebration cake market is a driving force within the ambient cake category, growing at 4.3% year on year.

The fourth largest segment in the category, the celebration cake market is worth almost £117m, with non-chocolate cakes making up 57% of this sector.

Mr Kipling recognise that there is an opportunity to drive this segment through the introduction of a leading brand – sales of familiar branded cakes exceed non-branded novelty cakes and licences in terms of rate of sale.

Featuring eye-catching packaging, ‘The Big French Fancy’ fits well with the carefree, light-hearted personality of Mr Kipling cakes, exemplified by the brand’s new strapline of ‘Exceedingly Happy Cakes’.

The launch will also benefit from the support of this year’s £4.4m brand spend.

“We expect ‘The Big French Fancy’ celebration cake to be a massive hit with consumers,” says Rachel Pirt, Senior Brand Manager.

“The standard French Fancy is one of Mr Kipling’s most popular lines, and the new variant is designed to capture consumers’ imaginations. Consumers love French Fancies, and they will love this new SKU, so stock up now!”

Short shelf lives can mean that independent stores are unable to stock celebration cakes without high wastage levels.

To avoid this, Mr Kipling cakes have a longer shelf life of 28 days, and come in small cases of just two products.

Premier Foods recommend that Mr Kipling cakes are positioned in between kids’ and adults’ celebration cakes to maximise sales potential.

Anyone who likes French Fancies will LOVE this. Bought one for my best mate's birthday - the sponge is divine, the icing (we had a yellow one)had a lovely lemony tang and the fondant was just like the small ones. I read that someone said the fondant was very mallowy so was expecting to be disappointed but not at all. Think maybe that was a duff one. Would definitely recommend - you wont be disappointed!

I love the idea of a giant french fancy, however having just sampled it i have to report disappointment. The icing on the giant one is not the same fondant icing as used on the originals and the cream has been replaced with a mallow creme.
It would have been truly special and a real treat to have a genuine giant french fancy.
I a*sume they have done this to ensure a longer shelf life.
Ah well, looks good though.

I put forward this idea to Mr Kipling over 3 years ago via email. I would have thought they could have sent me some free samples for this great idea.

It's my daughter's birthday this Sat**day - and as she works at ASDA has already said how much she would like a big pink french fancy cake as she has seen them going through the checkouts and it's her favourite cake. The whole family like french fancy cakes, so I guess I'll be making a trip to ASDA this Friday! Just keep the shelves well stocked as it's my husbands birthday on the 20th and I expect he'll want one too! Well done on a great idea!

I am an avid Mr Kipling fan so I'll be purchasing the Big French Fancy asap and having a little party to introduce it to my fellow cake eating friends! I have a special soft spot for the Big French Fancy as I am part of the design team at Vibrandt who did the packaging design. Will there be any ad campaigns or additional PR surrounding the launch of the product? Our design team would love to be involved! There are already many facebook groups and a couple of blogs dedicated to various Mr Kipling products. I'd love to generate a real buzz around the Big French Fancy as it's such a brilliant product! Kind Regards. Rach.
