New Penguin options revealed

Monday, 11 August 2008
Consumers now have more reasons to pick up a Penguin as United Biscuits UK (UBUK) extends its popular Penguin chocolate biscuit bar range. Penguin is a must-stock for retailers. It is currently one of the fastest growing chocolate biscuit bar brands in the UK demonstrating a phenomenal sales growth of 43% this year. More people are buying the brand and buying more frequently.

UBUK continues its commitment to improving product credentials of its biscuits and snacks ranges and these three new Penguin products are free from artificial colours or flavours and hydrogenated vegetable oil with the benefit of added calcium, all flagged on packs.

Penguin Wafer with Calcium

In February Penguin Wafer hit the market with a vengeance and is the biggest chocolate biscuit bar launch of 2008. Results to date have beaten all expectations with retail sales of £1.5m so far and expected to reach £2.5m by the end of the year.

Now Penguin Wafers have had a refresh with the introduction of added calcium that accounts for 25% of kids RDA. Research has shown that Mums see calcium as being an important factor in the purchase decision, they are aware that calcium is important for their children, a fact that is good for the growth of added calcium lines.

The two new products are a twin pack stick snack and a baked chocolate bar.

Penguin Big Stix

Penguin Big Stix are milk chocolate covered biscuit sticks with chocolate chips, with added calcium, 25% of kids RDA. There are six twin packs per box, MRRP £1.55.

Penguin Bakes
These soft baked chocolate flavoured bars have a chocolate flavoured filling and also additional calcium, again providing 25% of kids RDA. There are six bakes to a box, MRRP £1.55.

Added calcium is good news for Mums who, on a treat occasion, know that Penguin Big Stix and Penguin Bakes offer 25% of kids RDA of calcium.

Nick Stuart, Commercial Manager, at UB says: “Penguin has proven to be a tremendous success story in 2008 and these new innovations will fuel the growth of this brand even further generating more sales and profits for retailers. Adding calcium to the Penguin range gives an additional benefit to these well-loved biscuits.”

Standard Bars with calcium
The standard Penguin chocolate biscuit bar will also benefit from added calcium later in the year, culminating in the whole range offering the benefit of added calcium.

Merchandising

Nick Stuart says: “We recommend displaying Penguin Wafer and standard Penguins in the chocolate biscuit fixture and displaying Penguin Big Stix and Penguin Bakes in the children’s fixture to provide two opportunities to see Penguin in-store.”
