branston Premier Foods, the UK's No. 1 food manufacturer, has this week stolen the ‘Best Baked Bean' crown from market leader Heinz, when its Branston Beans brand beat Heinz in a Which? taste test.

Which? asked members of the public to try 12 types of baked beans including private label and economy varieties. Branston Beans were the brand of choice with Asda's own label in second, Morrisons third and Heinz in fourth place.

The 29p Morrisons Value Baked Beans were a great budget choice, coming fifth and scoring 70% - the same as Heinz, which cost more than twice as much at 64p.

Which? cooked 12 varieties of baked beans and put them through a rigorous tasting test using a panel of 120 members of the public, of all ages and backgrounds.

Nicola Davies, portfolio manger for Branston Beans at Premier Foods says "We're delighted that Branston Beans with its rich, thick tomato sauce, has been rated the UK's number one baked bean brand by Which?

"It's the thick and tangy sauce that makes Branston stand out. When we launched the brand we thought it was time for a step change in the history of baked beans and we are delighted that consumers are embracing the Branston brand."

The popularity is demonstrated in sales too, Branston is the fastest growing baked beans brand in the market with unit sales growth of 24.3%. Branston Beans penetration has grown from 8.8% to 12.3%.

Each baked bean variety was rated on its appearance, aroma, taste, texture and given an overall score.

The baked beans were blind tested so that tasters wouldn't be influenced by the brand or packaging.
