Warburtons, Britain’s leading branded baker, has unveiled a new electric powered truck which will be seen, but hardly heard, to deliver bread across central London.
Warburtons will use the new ‘Zeroed’ all-electric vehicle, which is said to be twice as efficient as its diesel rival, for deliveries in the capital, from next month.
At the heart of the specially branded 11-tonne truck is a new design of electric motor that will allow the vehicle to respond well to the start-stop road conditions that driving in London inevitably brings.
Mark Sutcliffe, group transport manager at Warburtons, said: “As everything is run by battery, the truck produces zero emissions and hardly makes a sound. It’s also been designed to make maximum use of the available stored electricity and the motor system is around twice as energy efficient as an equivalent diesel engine.”
The body of the Zeroed has been specifically designed and insulated to help maintain the “temperature integrity” of the bread during the delivery process to ensure maximum freshness for deliveries to retailers around the capital.
The truck, which has a range of around 80 miles before it needs to be recharged, will be based at Warburtons Enfield bakery in North London.
Zeroed is a joint initiative by specialised commercial builder Paneltex Ltd of Hull and fleet management specialist VMS Global. Based on the Isuzu range of trucks, and incorporating new permanent magnet motor technology, Zeroed offers pure electric commercial vehicles from five to 11 tonnes gross vehicle weight with a range of bodywork designed for a whole variety of uses.
