Wal-Mart to open convenience stores

Wal-Mart, Asda’s owner, has said that it will open four of its Marketside outlets this week as it attempts to take on Fresh & Easy.

The smaller venues will be open for business in Pheonix, Arizona on 4 October, less than 12 months after Tesco launched its own US offshoot – which is to reveal sales figures for the first time this week.

“We’re providing a meal solution for people on the go, people who want something that’s convenient, fresh and affordable,” store manager at Marketside in Chandler Mike Thomas said.

No mention of the Wal-Mart brand is likely to be seen anywhere in the new venues, claimed Thomas.

So far, nothing more has been revealed about the convenience chain, with stores themselves covered in plastic.

Last week, Wal-Mart said that it will look to reduce its waste from the use of shopping bags by 33% per store in the coming five years.
