Wal-Mart looks to take on Tesco in US


Tesco’s Fresh & Easy chain in the US could be set to face greater competition after Wal-Mart said it is going to expand and open more Marketside grocery outlets.


Wal-Mart has applied for a license to sell alcohol at an Oceanside development close to San Diego, California, near to where the rival has recently opened a venue, reports the Financial Times.

Moreover, the company that owns Asda is also due to boost its presence in Pheonix, with the creation of four small stores.

While at present Wal-Mart has suggested that the Martketside outlets are a pilot, the paper adds, it has also revealed that many job opportunities could become possible at the shops.

The Independent recently reported that Tesco is planning to expand into the Chicago area of the US via its Fresh & Easy arm.

However, a spokeswoman said that the company is at the moment focusing only on the west coast of the country.
