Wal-Mart eyes Russia

Wal-Mart is targeting Russia and neighbouring markets for expansion.

It follows today’s announcement the retailer has appointed a new president of Wal-Mart emerging markets – east.

Stephan Fanderl has joined the company in the role with a brief to lead the company’s efforts to explore retail business opportunities in Russia and neighbouring markets.

Fanderl joints Wal-Mart from the Rewe Group, the German retailer and travel company.

In 2006 he was appointed a board member and head of hypermarkets and supermarkets for Rewe Germany with gross revenues of €13bn.

“We are exceptionally pleased to have Stephan Fanderl join Wal-Mart Stores,” said Mike Duke, vice chairman, Wal-Mart Stores.

“He has outstanding managerial skills and has successfully developed Rewe’s business in Germany and eight Eastern European countries.”

Prior to Rewe, Fanderl held roles with Metro Holding in Germany and Poland, and Kienbaum Consultants International.
