The supermarket claimed that a number of items – such as pig trotters – should get their place in the sun especially because of the current shape of the economy.

Meat buyer at Waitrose Andy Boulton claimed that a while generation does not know about these options that were high on the agenda many years ago.

“Our mothers and grandmothers were experts at making what little they had go a long way when it came to cuts of meat but these thrifty techniques seem to have been lost inside a generation,” he commented.

He said that while many people cite a lack of time for not being inventive in the kitchen, sticking some ingredients in a pot is a simple way to cook.

“It is not only a cost effective way to enjoy high welfare, great quality food but a means of appreciating the full range of wonderful flavours and textures that are there for the taking,” he remarked.

The British Brassica Growers’ Association recently said that Waitrose’s claims its broccoli is available at a cheaper price than a year ago are untrue.
