Waitrose to open convenience store

Waitrose has revealed this it is to make inroads into the convenience store market as it attempts to halt a dip in sales growth.

In December Waitrose has said that it will open a trial venue in Nottingham, with three further stores to follow in the new year.

The venues will specialise in baked bread, meat, fish and cheese, while self service facilities are also set to be available.

Mark Price, managing director at the company, said: “We believe you shouldn’t have to compromise on the standard of your shopping experience just because a store is smaller.”

He added that Waitrose wishes to revive the old fashioned personalised service that was common in convenience shops, but in a fresh, modern setting.

Recently, a market town experiment was started by the company, with an emphasis on local goods and fresh produce.
