Waitrose targets Middle East despite UK sales worries

Waitrose is set to open its first store in the Middle East next week, when the Dubai Mall is unveiled.

Locally-sourced products along with branded Waitrose goods are going to be available in the biggest supermarket in the Burj development.

Products at the 5,137 sq metres venue range from cheese to meat and hot food. A number of non-food John Lewis items are also going to be on the shelves for customers in Dubai.

Last month, the supermarket said that it is going to move into the convenience sector for the first time.

Another Waitrose retail outlet will eventually open in Dubai Marina Mall and this is currently under construction.

The move comes as John Lewis in the UK revealed that revenues have dipped for the fifth week in a row, this time by 7.6%.

Trade at Waitrose rose by 0.5%, the company said, as customers looked to purchase more “comfort” food.

TNS director Ed Garner recently warned that Waitrose is “under pressure” following the news that till growth at the company rose by 1.6% in the 12 weeks to 5 October.
