Waitrose leads Christmas sales with 13.6% growth


Waitrose was the star performer in the grocery sector over Christmas with sales growth of 13.6% over the three months to December 26.

According to new data from research company Nielsen, Waitrose saw the value of its sales grow the fastest of all the large supermarket chains over the Christmas period.

The next fastest was Morrisons, which saw its sales grow by 10.1%, while Marks & Spencer saw a disappointing 3.7% uplift. The figures are based on purchasing data from 14,500 households.

According to Nielsen, overall sales in the supermarket sector grew by 6.7% over the four weeks to December 26. Sales over the last two weeks of this period spiked, growing by 8%.

Asda grew sales by 6.1%, Tesco by 5.3% and Sainsbury’s by 5.9%.

Nielsen’s Mike Watkins said: “The level of promotional activity in supermarkets usually drops off in December but it remained at 35% this year.”
