Foods that enjoyed popularity in the 1970s are again rising to prominence during the credit crunch, according to Waitrose.
The John Lewis-owned supermarket said sales of scampi have risen by 80% while king prawns sales have been boosted by 50%.
And compared with this period last year, cheesecake sales have risen by 74%, while cider sales are up 11%, Waitrose revealed.
Executive chef Neil Nugent said: “Our eating habits subliminally mirror the fiscal way of the world too. As a result, we at Waitrose are laying in extra stock of all the ingredients needed for cheese and pineapple sticks, Beef Stroganoff and Black Forest Gateau.”
Last week, Waitrose said overall sales were down 4.6%, as John Lewis sales in the week up to 15 November plummeted by 14%.
And the latest mySupermarket.co.uk figures found the price of staple food items such as bread and milk is on the rise.
