UK retailers take action on climate change

When it comes to taking action on climate change, many of the UK’s biggest retailing giants are working side by side to drive change.

Alliance Boots, Marks & Spencer, Marshalls, Next Retail Ltd, Premier Foods, Pret a Manger, Sainsbury’s, Selfridges & Co, Tesco and Waitrose are just some of the organisations in The Prince’s Mayday Network, the collaborative movement of UK businesses committed to action on climate change, convened by Business in the Community (BITC).

Mayday campaign director Katie Webber said: “Retailers are in a powerful position of being able to positively influence the behaviour of millions of consumers, as evidenced by the success of campaigns like Marks & Spencer’s Plan A and Ariel’s Turn to Thirty.”

New markets are also opening up creating new commercial opportunities and providing new jobs. Resource efficiency creates cost reductions and the mobilisation of supply chains can provide further savings and efficiency gains.

Mike Barry, head of sustainable business at Marks & Spencer, said: “We encourage all retailers to help us move towards the sustainable, low carbon future and mobilise the consumer demand that will speed that transition. It is imperative that we encourage our supply chains, customers and employees to start building a sustainable future.”

Businesses can join The Mayday Network for free and access a range of practical support via the Mayday Journey and from partners that will help reduce their carbon emissions.
