Tesco to open on Boxing Day

Tesco is set to break with tradition this Christmas and open many of its stores on Boxing Day as it looks to offset the impact of the recession.

The retailer will this year open almost 200 of its largest stores despite normally giving staff a two-day break during the festive period.

As a result of increased competition, the retailer said: “We’re opening more of our biggest [Extra] stores this year and our Homeplus stores on Boxing Day as many customers tell us that they now see this day as a shopping day.”

In recent months Tesco has seen rivals Aldi and Lidl grow in popularity and his launched its own discount range, reports the Financial Times.

At the beginning of the month, the grocer reported like-for-like sales growth in the third quarter of just 2% – half the growth recorded in the previous quarter.

A number of other retailers have signalled their intentions to open their doors on Boxing Day.
