Tesco takes advantage of ‘ugly fruit’ rule change

Tesco has said it will take advantage of a relaxation in European Union (EU) rules to sell strangely shaped food products.

Its Monster Bunch pack will include swedes, onions and sweet potato, along with onion and carrot, and retail for £2.50.

Following the removal of the “ridiculous” EU ban on oversized fruit and vegetables, which had been in place for 20 years, Tesco said shoppers will now have access to a greater range of food.

Tesco vegetable buyer Jonathan Corbett said: “We have already spoken to our suppliers who will be saving their choice oversized vegetables for us.

“As the seasons change shoppers can also look forward to giant cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, aubergines, courgettes, turnips and whatever else is offered us.”

A number of retailers such as Sainsbury’s had called for the rules to be scrapped.
