Tesco cuts prices of 700 clothing lines

Tesco has kick-started a supermarket price war by today lowering the price of more than 700 clothing lines.

Prices are being slashed on many key items, which now include a £5 women’s shirt, a £25 men’s suit and a £5 girl’s tracksuit.

Clothing chief executive Terry Green said: “To kick start this initiative, we’ve selected our ‘most wanted’ products that we know are popular with our customers and slashed the prices.

“Customers can rest assured that low prices are here to stay and the garments are from the same suppliers and of the same quality our customers have come to expect – no compromises, just great fashion product at lower prices.”

He added: “We also know that customers care about how their clothes are manufactured, which is why we work so hard to be a responsible retailer.

“Our factory audits are detailed and thorough, involving a combination of record checking and on-site interviews with workers.”

Over the Christmas period, the company’s clothing sales were up 5% year-on-year.

The promotion also includes women’s fashion jeans for £6, £8 men’s sweatshirts and a £3 check boy’s shirt.

Clothing formed some of the stock available as part of Tesco’s biggest-ever sale, which began on Boxing Day.

A survey released in October found UK shoppers are increasingly concerned by fashion ethics.
