Tesco plots own-label fashion site

Supermarket giant Tesco is planning to start its own online fashion website as it attempts to cash in on growing market.

Only own-brand clothes will be sold on the site, which is being seen as a competitor to the successful site Asos.

Commercial director Richard Brasher said: “Our clothing ranges have been popular in the shops where we sell them – so we’ve been looking at how we can bring the fashion ranges to more customers.”

It is expected that Tesco’s site will be ready in time for the launch of its autumn collection this year.

Asos reported a 118% increase in year-on-year sales in the nine weeks to 16 January.

Tesco this month cut the prices 700 clothing lines.

Chied executive Sir Terry Leahy argued this week that trading conditions are getting worse.
