Tesco makes further price cuts

Tesco has made further price reductions today, this time cutting the cost of about 3,000 staple goods by £100m.

According to Britain’s biggest supermarket, the move means overall investment in price cuts across the last fortnight has been about £200m.

The latest promotions include four multipack bags of Walkers crisps for £4 and three Hovis loaves for £3, plus a 200g Nestle coffee jar for £3.

Real till receipts will be used by the company to show comparisons with its rival supermarkets.

Tesco commercial and marketing director Richard Brasher said: “For years retailers have made claims and counter claims about who is the cheapest.

“But until now nobody has looked at what shoppers actually put in their shopping baskets to provide a true picture of what customers are really spending.”

Last week, Asda dropped the prices of about 1,000 staple items, saying that this year is likely to be a tough one for many consumers.

Tesco revealed its own “biggest-ever” set of reductions on Boxing Day, opening some stores at a time when they would normally be closed.
