Tesco is slashing the price of about 1,000 products from Friday (12 December) in a bid to tempt Christmas shoppers.
The retailer said prices of items such as Christmas puddings and beef will be halved from tomorrow as consumers remain reluctant to buy before bigger discounting occurs.
Commercial director Richard Brasher said: “Customers are telling us that they are delaying their main Christmas purchases as they wait for bargains.
“Our Half Price Sale reassures customers that we’re not making them wait.”
Its promotion comes after the grocer said sales growth dropped to 2% in the last quarter.
Tesco’s move follows similar attempts by retailers to encourage people to start spending money.
Last week, Marks & Spencer held a second one-day sale and has announced further long-running promotions in the run-up to Christmas.
A closing down sale is also beginning at Woolworths, after its administrator Deloitte confirmed a buyer has not yet been found for the retailer.
It already has a 50%-off sale running.
