Tesco brings forward VAT cut

Tesco is implementing the government’s reduction of VAT early, despite the fact the measures do not officially come into effect until Monday.

Customers will not see the reductions at the shelves, as they will instead be made once they get to the checkout from this Friday (28 November), the retailer said.

Tesco commercial director Richard Brasher said: “We know that many families will start their Christmas shopping this weekend as pay packets arrive and we don’t want customers to miss out on the cut in VAT.”

Additionally, Tesco said it is cutting the prices of 1,000 products by up to 50%.

Chancellor Alistair Darling’s announcement on Monday that VAT will be slashed has been met with a mixed reaction.

This week, Tesco said it will be taking advantage of a European Union rule change to sell oddly shaped fruit and vegetables.
