Tesco appeal ‘could delay competition test’

Tesco’s decision to appeal against the Competition Commission inquiry into the grocery industry could delay the introduction of the competition test, analysts have said today.

A review sought by Tesco into the test is due to be heard next week, and will involve a number of other retailers such as Asda and Marks & Spencer.

While the commission thought that a test could be implemented by April next year, industry sources have predicted this could be put back until 2010.

Tesco denied that it is trying to put off the creation of any new legislation.

A spokeswoman told the Independent: “This is not a stalling tactic.”

The Competition Commission recommended that a test should be set up so that one grocery retailer does not become too dominant on the market.

Politicians should stop delaying over the creation of a possible ombudsman so that consumers get a fair deal from the grocery industry, the Association of Convenience Stores has said.

Waitrose and Asda have both said they will oppose Tesco’s stance on the issue.
