Tesco and Asda investigate worker abuse claims

Supermarket giants Tesco and Asda have been forced into launching investigations into claims that workers who make its clothes in Bangladesh are poorly paid and abused.

A Guardian investigation alleged that employees who make clothes for George at Asda and Tesco, often worked up to 80 hours a week for as little as 4p an hour.

Workers interviewed from seven different factories claimed wages were so low that they could not provide for their families.

It was also reported that staff were subjected to physical and verbal abuse by supervisors.

After being contacted about the allegations, Asda said it would re-audit its factories as it finds abuse “unacceptable” while Tesco said it had completed unannounced audits at 48 sites and would investigate if given the name of the offending factories.
