Supermarket turkey suppliers threatened by inspector strike

Supermarket turkey supplies may be hit this Christmas if a planned strike by meat inspectors goes ahead.

Unison, the union that represents about 1,000 Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) workers, said that millions of pounds in the sector may be lost if the strike happens because of the popularity of turkeys at this time of year.

Workers voted in favour of the strike following changes in working patterns and overtime cuts.

Simon Watson, Unison’s national officer, said: “Unless the employers abandon their plans and get back around the table to negotiate a settlement, the industry could lose millions of pounds in lost meat production in the run-up to Christmas.”

Chief executive at the MHS Steve McGrath said he is hopeful that a settlement can be reached prior to any industrial action taking place.

Waitrose said last week sales of duck and goose are proving larger than the traditional choice of Turkey in the festive period.

Last week, Tesco said it is offering a full Christmas dinner including turkey for under £8.
