Supermarket sweep for Sainsbury’s at Retail Industry Awards


Sainsbury’s picked up a raft of awards at the Retail Industry Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House hotel last night.

Chief executive Justin King was on hand to collect the trophy as Sainsbury’s was awarded the prestigious Supermarket of the Year title for the second year running, with judges describing its turnaround as “simply phenomenal”.

Sainsbury’s won praise for connecting with its customers and being the “most contemporary retail brand” at “the leading edge of food”.

The multiple retailer also triumphed in the categories:

• Multiple Off-Licence Retailer of the Year
• Seafood Retailer of the Year
• Multiple Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year

It was also a good night for Morrisons, who won:

• Multiple Training Initiative of the Year
• Fresh Flower Supermarket of the Year

And Peter Kennedy of Morrisons’ stores in Anchor Mills and Anniesland, Glasgow, picked up the title Supermarket Store Manager of the Year.

Asda was named Multiple Environmental Retailer of the Year, for its waste-reduction and energy-saving initiatives, while Marks & Spencer Simply Food won National Convenience Chain of the Year.
