Supermarkets have reported a surge in panic-buying as shoppers braced themselves for more heavy snowfall.
Sales of cat litter shot up as customers snapped it up as an alternative to salt for clearing ice.
Asda said sales of Wellington boots, puddings and take-away food, as well as anti-freeze products, fire logs and thermal underwear, had all seen big increases while purchases of 25kg bags of grit were up by 32%.
Sainsbury’s said shoppers were stocking up on store cupboard and winter essential items.
The supermarket said flask and travel mug sales had increased by more than 160% on this time last year. Hotpots and casseroles rose by 20%, cat litter by 20% and oat cereals by 50%.
Morrisons’ reported sales of 1.5kg bags of cooking salt were up by almost 400% compared with the beginning of last week, with sales of Morrisons 1kg bags of table salt rising by nearly 340%.
Tesco said soup sales were up 80% on two weeks ago, when the last major snowfall hit the UK. Ready meals have also seen a 40% sales increase over the period.
