The Sunday roast could become a thing of the past thanks to food price rises over the next 20 years, a new report out today has suggested.
Chatham House, a think-tank, said falls in the price of bread, milk and butter are only temporary.
A shortage of water and climate change are likely to hit production in the coming years, thus hiking up prices further, the report said.
Report author Alex Evans said consumers may become less reliant on the foods they are traditionally enjoyed.
He commented: “We are not saying people won’t be able to have a Sunday roast but we will be eating less red meat in future.”
In another report, Oxfam said that food shortages are set to become of a huge problem over the coming two decades.
The National Farmers’ Union warned in December that supplies of sprouts could be hit due to the introduction of new European Union pesticides controls.
