Strong start for Waitrose in Glasgow

waitrose store 1Waitrose has claimed sales at its new store on Byres Road, Glasgow were 39% ahead of forecast in the first four weeks of trading.

The upmarket retailer opened the doors of its first Glasgow store, its third in Scotland, on 12 November 2009.

It said more than 4,000 shoppers were visiting the Byres Road store each day and staff were handling more than 28,000 transactions each week.

Top selling items included Waitrose ready meals – particularly the Indian meal for two; Scottish mature cheddar and blueberries.

According to Andy Loveday, branch manager at the Byres Road store, West End customers have given Waitrose a warm welcome to Glasgow.

He said: “We’ve been bowled over by the response from customers: many already shop at John Lewis but the Waitrose brand is perhaps less familiar, though you wouldn’t know it.

“We’ve had great feedback from customers about our fresh produce, our fish and meat counters, our wines, the regional lines – in short they really like what they’ve found.”

The Glasgow store represents an expansion by Waitrose in Scotland, part of an ambitious UK-wide growth strategy by the employee-owned supermarket.

Subject to planning permission being granted, Waitrose plans to build a 25,000 sq ft store at Newton Mearns, due to open by 2011.
