Staple groceries ‘rise by £740′

A staple basket of food items has risen by more than £740 a year, according to the latest set of figures revealed by mySupermarket.co.uk.

The company said that the average price of the basket of the 24 items it has studied has increased by 14.3% compared to October 2007 – after Nielsen revealed that sales growth at multiple supermarkets has slowed down.

Items that are most alike were chosen in all of the supermarkets included in the research, such as bread tomatoes, milk and eggs.

Additionally, the company released its food inflation index (FII), which monitors the price rises at Asda, Tesco and Morrisons, and said that food and drink prices were up by 3.6% in the past year.

“Shoppers are still having to bear the brunt of a large price increase in the overall staples basket compared to one year ago – and at today’s prices, staples cost four times the rate of the mySupermarket.co.uk FII,” said director of the company Johnny Stern.
