Spend on fruit and vegetables to outstrip ready meals

The UK may be about to shed its image as a nation of ready meal munchers, according to the latest research from RTS.

It reports expenditure on fruit and vegetables set to increase by £600m between 2006 and 2011, compared with an increase of just £300m in ready meals sales.

The trend is repeated across Western Europe, including France, Germany and Italy.

Helping drive growth in market value are:

- pre-sliced vegetables
- ready-to-eat salad mixes
- convenient servings of fruit
- demand for organic produce from health-conscious and environmentally aware shoppers

The data is taken from RTS’s Big Food Guide 2011
