Spar store becomes a Co-op

Acting on behalf of Spar, Christie + Co, has sold the corporate-owned Spar store in Tilbury, Essex, to the Chelmsford Star division of the Co-operative Society.

Located in the town’s main retail area, the 3,000 sq ft store features a chilled, walk-in ‘off-licence’ area and benefits from a strong customer base.

The store was sold for an undisclosed sum, off an asking price of £350,000 for the residue of the lease.

Christie + Co’s Mark Page, who handled the sale, said: “Interest was received from both independent operators and corporate supermarket chains. Chelmsford Star had initially targeted the town of Tilbury as an area for potential growth and was delighted when Spar decided to release its unit.

“Once the deal was agreed, the sale proceeded quickly to exchange with completion in the first week of January.”

Chelmsford Star has since re-branded the unit with its new corporate signage and trade levels have remained strong.
