The opening of an 80,000sq ft Spar flagship hypermarket in Bangalore has “dramatically increased” its presence in India.
The launch of hypermarket in the massive new Mantri Mall in Bangalore – the biggest hypermarket in any mall in India – is said to further underline the commitment of Spar to the Indian market.
Spar recently announced its intention to have 25 hypermarkets in India by the end of 2012.
The new hypermarket has created 400 new job opportunities for local people.
It will showcase the latest international design features and focus on fresh.
The opening follows the launch of three other Spar hypermarkets in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Dr Gordon Campbell, managing director of Spar International, said: “The launch of the Mantri Mall store reflects the expansion of Spar, not just in India but globally, into new and exciting markets thanks to our winning retail formats.
“The flagship hypermarket will provide a world-class retail experience, while maintaining Spar’s ongoing commitment to good value shopping.”
The Mantri Mall store has wide aisles, 45 checkouts supported by 3D scanning technology, 11ft checkout belts and 5m queuing space to enhance the customer shopping experience with quicker service.
“Unique design features include a stunning glass surround enabling customers to watch their selected fish being prepared, the bakery production area is shielded by glass so that customers can see the cakes and pastries being finished, and we have the biggest trolley fleet in South India,” said Campbell.
“The food solutions on offer are largely for in-store refreshment, and include a bakery and concept counters providing fresh juices, Indian savouries and sweets and fruit salads. Shoppers can of course also buy these items to take away.”
The majority of foods available are locally sourced. An extensive Spar India private label range will also be available, encompassing both food and non-food products at unbeatable prices.
The own-label food range of sauces and ketchup, jams, noodles and juices are currently under development and will be available to customers from April, while the non-food private label range is set to include hand-wash, sanitisers, toilet cleaners and other household cleaning aids, comprising around 100 SKUs by the end of 2010.
