Supermarket chain Somerfield has received three takeover approaches in recent weeks, according to a report in yesterday’s Observer newspaper.
The newspaper said that the offers have led to Somerfield’s shareholders considering selling the 900-store business in a potential £1.8bn deal.
Somerfield is owned by a consortium consisting of property magnate Robert Tchenguiz and private equity firms Apax and Barclays Capital.
Although the report does not name the potential suitors, it suggests that the likes of Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons could be interested.
