Sainsbury’s sparks new supermarket fuel war

Sainsbury’s has hit back in the latest fuel price wars and is offering petrol for 94.9p a litre from today (24 October), after similar moves by Morrisons and Asda this week.

In response, Asda said it will lower fuel prices again to match Sainsbury’s and freeze them for at least ten days.

Darren Blackhurst, Asda training director said: “It’s simply not acceptable for anyone to be paying more than £1 for a litre of petrol no matter where they live in the UK.”

Convenience trading director at Sainsbury’s Xavier Vidal added: “We have always strived to pass all cost savings onto our customers in an effort to help bring their weekly costs down.”

A barrel of oil now costs about $66 (£42), down from $147 in July, something that has prompted prime minister Gordon Brown to urge petrol companies to follow the supermarkets’ lead.

When Morrisons dropped the price of petrol and diesel, it said that it was “leading the market” and will continue to show commitment to consumers.
