Sainsbury’s first eco-friendly convenience store, which opens in Bath city centre next month, will save an estimated 27 tonnes of CO2 over the next 15 years .
The 3,000sq ft Sainsbury’s Local has been built with low-carbon materials and will promote lighting, heating, ventilation, electricity and water usage reduction.
The store beat its target of achieving an energy performance certificate of ‘B’ and was awarded an ‘A’.
Sainsbury’s said the store would set a benchmark for its future environmental convenience stores.
The Bath SouthGate store aims to achieve 90% minimum construction waste avoidance from landfill, a 25% reduction in gas and electricity usage and a 50% reduction in mains water usage per sq ft of sales floor.
Dido Harding, convenience director at Sainsbury’s, said: “We’re really looking forward to opening the doors of our first environmentally-friendly Local in Bath next month.
“As a company we take sustainability issues very seriously and are working hard to reduce energy, packaging and food waste. We hope the learnings will be put to good use in further developing our eco-friendly initiatives for our future stores and added to the standard spec.”
Sainsbury’s now has over 300 convenience stores and plans to open another 150 by 2011.
