Rose calls for “even-handed” government help

Sir the Stuart Rose, the executive chairman at Marks & Spencer, has said that retailers should be given extra government help during the recession.

Rose said the government should be “even-handed” in the sectors that it offers financial help to during the financial crisis, after support was given to the car and banking industries.

He said: “What is going to happen this year when what I call a proper company gets into trouble? Is the same sort of help going to be offered to these businesses? I don’t know. Time will tell.”

The government faces some difficult questions on who it is going to help in the next few months, Rose added.

Earlier this month, he said that retailers face even more difficult times as the recession worsens in 2009.
