Rhythm & Booze buys First Quench stores

Barnsley-based off-licence Rhythm & Booze has snapped up 34 stores from KPMG, the administrators of failed off-licence operator First Quench.

The deal has saved 190 jobs and doubled the size of the wine and beer retailer.

Following the acquisition of the stores, which traded under the Threshers, Wine Rack and The Local brands, Rhythm & Booze owns 76 stores, employs 450 staff and expects to increase turnover to more than £80m a year.

Martin Swaine, managing director of Rhythm & Booze’s parent group, R&M Swaine, said: “The stores are in busy locations with a lot of activity where I believe Rhythm & Booze can trade successfully.

Among the 34 stores are eight outlets in Sheffield, two in Rotherham and one in Bawtry.
