Retailers attend training course organised by Skillsmart Retail

Ten independent retailers will attend a training course after they were awarded £15,000 worth of training scholarships from Skillsmart Retail and Retail Trust this week.

The ten £1,500 awards to the Oxford Summer School awarded to senior employees from independent stores after a tough selection process.

Those chosen for the awards included staff from convenience stores, wine merchants and butchers.

Anne Seaman chief executive of Skillsmart Retail said: “We are very happy to award these scholarships as they help independent retailers whose training budgets may not stretch to cover the cost of the course.”

Nigel J L Rothband, chief executive of Retail Trust, said: “Retail Trust has long recognised the need for increased opportunities for people working in retail. These scholarships will help managers from smaller companies to achieve their potential and fulfil their ambitions in retail.”

Winners included Mark Dent of Hanging Ditch Wine Merchants, an alcohol retailer in Manchester, Raj Aggarwal, a convenience store retailer in Leicester and Louise Derringchere who works in a convenience store in Norwich.

The course focuses on enhancing expertise in the management of four key retail resources: people, money, merchandise and retail space.
