Pubs support low-cost alcohol supermarket ban

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (AMLR) has said that the new focus on irresponsible selling of alcohol is a welcome one.

Speaking after Alcohol Concern attacked Asda for selling Skol lager cheaper than the price of water, the AMLR gave its support to a proposed ban on below-cost sales tabled by Conservative MP Nigel Evans.

Chief executive Nick Bish said the association is “delighted” that the issue is being highlighted in Parliament and urged politicians to sign the motion introduced by Evans.

“Supermarket chains have argued that their priority is to offer good value to customers across the board. This is a cynical and disingenuous position which fails to recognise that alcohol is special case,” Bish commented.

He argued that a ban can be “easily” introduced into a statutory Code of Practice.
