Professor calls for universal food labelling system

A more streamlined food labelling system has to be created in the UK, consisting of numerous pieces of information, an expert has suggested.

City University’s Professor Tim Lang told a conference in Liverpool that packaging could include environmental details such as how far the product has travelled, alongside nutritional figures.

This move might alleviate any paradoxes that exist at present, he said, where consumers want to help the natural world but also wish to adopt a healthier diet.

Lang commented: “Whilst governments continue to let the market take its course, ill-informed consumer choices are contributing to massive crises in human health, food security and environmental degradation.”

He suggested that a “major crisis” will be seen unless changes are seen in the industry.

While the academic confessed that the alterations would be “complex”, they can be achieved in time. An independent panel of experts could ensure that reliable information about the impact of food is delivered to consumers.

The British Retail Consortium recently welcomed the news from the Waste and Resources Action Programme that the amount of packaging used on food items has not increased in the last two years.
