Poundland is to open its 250th store on 21 November 2009 in Tooting, South London.
The company, which claims to be Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, said the store opening highlighted it’s impressive 2009 expansion programme, which has hit the 250 mark months ahead of schedule.
Poundland has opened 40 new stores since April 2009, said it had created 1,500 permanent jobs and 2,000 temporary jobs to cover the Christmas period.
Poundland said its trading model, where every item costs just £1, has generated an ever-increasing and loyal customer base and proven to be the perfect antidote to the recession.
The opening of the 250th store follows the launch of Poundland in Northern Ireland, where six stores have already opened and a further two are planned before Christmas.
The company will forge ahead with its nationwide expansion plans and aims to open 17 more stores before the end of the financial year.
Jim McCarthy, chief executive, Poundland, said: “We are thrilled to have hit the 250 milestone ahead of schedule and to be able to offer even more customers our unique shopping experience in the run up to Christmas.”
