Poundland reports steady Christmas sales

Poundland witnessed “steady” sales growth over the Christmas period even though trading conditions were difficult, the firm said today.

Like-for-like sales grew 3.9% in the five weeks to 4 January, while sales including new stores jumped 24.3% from the same period a year earlier, Poundland revealed.

Jim McCarthy, chief executive, said: “It is clear that Poundland has been one of few retailers reporting growth during the 2008 Christmas trading period.

“We are well positioned to capitalise on the continuing strong customer trend to shop savvy and seek value for money.

“Well over 2 million customers every week have enjoyed the benefits of saving money on top brands at Poundland, where everything is a pound.”

The discount company is planning to open another 30 stores in 2009.

McCarthy last year said Poundland is “perfectly positioned” to meet the needs of consumers as they head towards value in a recession.
