Newspaper margins campaign launched by NFRN

A campaign is being launched this week to encourage newspaper publishers to maintain pro rata percentage margins to retailers whenever there is an increase in the cover price of the newspaper.

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) is actively encouraging members to give positive sales support to publishers who maintain the principle of pro rata terms.

NFRN national president Colin Finch said: “With national newspapers having a fixed/printed cover price, together with a fixed retail margin that is also determined by the publisher, it is difficult for retailers to stay in business unless they are given a periodic ‘pay rise’ through pro rata terms increases to offset the increasing overheads in running their shop.

“Equally, when publishers reduce the cover price for promotional purposes, it is important that retailer pence per copy margins are maintained,” he said.
