A new supermarket chain, Haldanes Stores, is set to open for business in four former Somerfield stores in Scotland in November 2009.
Haldanes will be the first new supermarket name to open in the UK for a quarter of a century.
Haldanes aims to source 30% of its produce from local suppliers. The first stores will open in Carluke, Lanarkshire, and Prestonpans, Broxburn and Tranent near Edinburgh.
Further expansion is planned and Haldanes claimed it would eventually employ 700 staff.
Haldanes has joined wholesale supplier Nisa-Today’s, which has bases in Lincolnshire and Broxbrun near Edingburgh.
