New heads for Nielsen, Leatherhead and TNS…plus all the latest People Moves


Three of the food and drink industry’s top research companies have appointed new bosses.


At Nielsen, Justin Sargent, executive commercial director, UK, is promoted to managing director for the UK and Ireland. Sargent takes over from Eleni Nicholas who takes on a commercial and development role for Nielsen in Europe.

Leatherhead Food International (LFI) has appointed Dr Paul Berryman as chief executive. Berryman has been LFI’s research director since 2005 and is the former head of science and food standards for Hampshire County Council.

Over at TNS, Duncan Mortlock is appointed as international business development director of its international services division. Mortlock will oversee PoS and ATM operations for TNS’s retail and financial customers.

Elsewhere in the sector, Tesco’s deputy group treasurer, Keith Richardson, has joined Lloyds TSB as relationship director of the bank’s specialist retail sector. Richardson worked for Tesco for 28 years and was instrumental in the creation of the retailer’s treasury department in the early 1980s.

Keeping in finance, Greencore has appointed Geoff Doherty as chief financial officer of the group and chief executive of its property and agribusiness activities.
Doherty’s appointment takes effect from 15 February. He succeeds Patrick Coveney who took on the role of group chief executive designate in December 2007.

Doherty, joined Greencore in 2001 as group financial controller and was appointed group development director in 2005, joining the board in July of that year.

In the independent sector, Booker has recruited Garry Stimpson to the new role of merchandising controller with responsibility to develop formats and layouts of independent stores.
And Costcutter has appointed Mandy Walsh as group human resources manager.

In the alcoholic drinks sector Scottish & Newcastle has appointed Carol Saunders as head of off-trade customer marketing; Beam Global UK has appointed Mark Riley as sales director and The Company of Wine People Europe has recruited two managers to supports its Arniston Bay, Thandi and Kumkani brands.

Barney Davis is appointed as brand business development manager with responsibility for the brands in the UK and Ireland. Davis was previously a category buyer at the Co-operative Group. Felicity Billington is appointed as brand and trade marketing manager, joining from Ehrmanns.

Buckingham Vintners has a new sales director too. Craig Durham, who has worked at the company for four years with key account responsibility for Morrisons, the Co-op and Nisa Today’s, is promoted to the role.

In the dairy category Sean Whitfield is appointed as sales and marketing director at Kerrygold, taking over from Ray Levett who is retiring.

While at Delamare Dairy, the goats’ milk brand, Ed Salt is appointed to the new role of commercial director.

Two local food companies have announced appointments too.

Artisan Biscuits, the Ashbourne-based business, has appointed Stephen Hodgetts as managing director.

Sister business The Fine Cheese Co has appointed Dean Lord as export sales director. Lord will also be responsible for exports at Artisan Biscuits.

In non-food, The Mentholatum Company, a division of Rohto Pharmaceuticals, which owns healthcare brands including Deep Heat, Deep Freeze and Oxy skincare has opened a new sales office in Camberley headed by sales development director Mike Smith.

Finally, the Scottish Wholesale Association has appointed Iain Hill, managing director of Ayrshire-based Iain Hill, as vice president.
